BACKGROUND
HISTORY
~~~ Sing me a Fairy Tale
Oliver was born under exceedingly normal circumstances in a little home in Qubec. He was a fairly normal child, happy as any average child. He was not particularly intelligent though he did exhibit an interest in music even at a very young age. His parents were doting, this being their first and only child. They indulged this interest and cultivated his talent and he learned piano and guitar at a young age. He excelled easily and loved it.
He did not struggle in school nor was he an over achiever. He always did his home and exhibited quite a lot of discipline and perseverance for someone so young but other than that he was strikingly normal. He was the sort of boy who was remembered for being kind of helpful but slipped from teachers minds after he left. It suited little Oliver fine, he likes being himself. he made quite a lot of friends and he was fairly popular in the sense that no one really hated him. But again, he was exceptionally average and didn’t stick out all that much.
That was in the beginning of course. That was when Oliver was normal.
~~~ Sing me a Story About Change
When Oliver was around 13 or so things started changing. He was growing up and figuring things out and those things were a bit on the controversial side. He still hung around with his friends (he was making tighter, longer lasting friends) and he was being exposed to things more befitting of a teen age boy. He learned very quickly, without any real surprise but not much of any other reaction, that he did not feel the same way as his other male friends about girls. They were nice enough, he had girls as friends after all, but he had no desire to cultivate any other kind of relationship with someone of the female species either. He just didn’t like girls like that.
He was not overly concerned, honestly. He wasn’t that bothered that eh didn’t like girls. It wasn’t that he liked boys but more that he didn’t really like anybody much. He was fine with this and never really worried much. He still invited his close friends over to his house. That was how the whole things started really.
There was this boy Oliver’s age. Cyril. He was red haired and blue eyed with a bright smile and a high laugh. He always had a lot of energy and spent lots of time around Oliver, getting piggy back rides form the bigger boy and just being a loveable friend. He spent several night over Oliver’s house, the two of them watching movies, laughing having fun. It was innocent stuff until one night. Oliver wasn’t exactly sure what prompted it but they started a ridiculous two person version of truth or dare and they each confessed they had never kissed a girl, or anyone else. It was Cyril’s idea but Oliver didn’t object. Cyril kissed Oliver. It was messy and new and odd… but it fit and it was right.
That was when Oliver got it.
~~~ Sing me a Love Song
What Oli and Cyril had was something secret and cautious and more about friendship then anything else. It sprung from friendship after all and was really more about the manifestation of that trust than exploring new depths of love, but it was about that too. It was a curiosity more than anything else. Oliver found himself getting more and more comfortable with the whole idea. Cyril and Oli came to the conclusion that they were gay together and they were dating but it was all kept under wraps.
They never dated girls, it felt too much like cheating. Oli knew that he really did love Cyril on so many levels. They stayed over each other’s house, kissed in secret and in dark places, at night when no one could see. They were desperately scared of someone finding out. It wasn’t that they were in a particularly homophobic area but Oli was worried about his parents. He heard them talk about homosexuality being wrong and immoral and he was worried. He was never particularly excellent, but he didn’t want to disappoint them like that. So he lied.
They grew routinely more comfortable with each other and their relationship and though it had never progressed past a blowjob or two (they were afraid of anything more, afraid of the noise, afraid of being caught) they really were in love. When they were 17 all things went to hell. Oli’s mother caught them kissing and it was a blow up. She demanded Cyril leave, she shouted and threw things. Oli had a word war with his parents for nearly a week before leaving the house.
He stayed with Cyril for a while. Cyril had two bothers and came out to his family shorting after Oli’s mother caught them. he was treated with curious looks but general acceptance and Oli was taken in as well so long as it was understood that he was confined to the couch at bed time. Oli got a job, paid Cyril’s parents like he was a tenant and it worked for a while.
Shortly after he turned 18 Cyril and Oli moved out and moved into their own apartment. Eventually they moved out of Quebec to Montreal. They made it mostly because Oli started teaching, giving up the benefits of his musical wisdom unto others, and it was a good life. When they were both about 20 they adopted a kid. Oli hadn’t spoken to his parents since moving out. Little Tucker (it was Cyril’s idea as a name) and Cyril and Oli had a happy home.
~~~ Sing me a Tragedy
Tucker really never had much of a chance to met his father Cyril. When the boy was about a year old (he was only a month old when they got him) Cyril was killed in a car crash. It devastated Oli. He had this little baby, his life was brilliant, wonderful. He had his first love, his first kiss, his first EVERYTHING right there with him, sharing his bed and then it was gone. It was taken from him swiftly, like someone yanked the rug out form under his feet and he was on his back staring at the stars.
He didn’t know how he managed to get past the first day, the first week, the first month without Cyril. It was awful, hazing and focused mainly on Tucker. Really Oli pulled through for that little boy who needed him. Where else would Tucker go. Oli had to protect him, he did.
Oli’s parents didn’t come to Cyril’s funeral. Not that Oli was expecting them, but it was sort of like a blow when he was down.
He was staring to slide down hill. He kept his teaching job his music lessons in tact but he was still slipping. He was drinking a lot more than he used to, playing sad songs, hardly ever leaving his home. Then Tucker started getting older and Oli learned to put all of his emotions in the back of his mind for the benefit of his child. He started doing what was best for Tucker. He took the kid out for play dates, day care, all sorts of things.
In a way the band kind of saved him. It was a neat idea brought to him by one of his older students who knew this kid who was thinking of starting a prog metal band. Oli liked the idea and Tucker got along fine with CROSS so Oli checked them out. They were good msuicans and he agreed. If nothing else it gave him something to do, something to keep him going, keep his head above water. It came at the right time.
They decided to go on tour and Oli agreed. It was a great opportunity, this weird contestant game show of a tour. And they let him bring Tucker along which was an absolute must. They had IVES too, who was 16, still should be in high school. Tucker was technically home schooled now but Oli really made an effort to make sure the kid was learning something. He got homework and everything. IVES would help little Tucker with his homework as well. It was a good set u.
There are a couple nights where Oli drinks a little too much and he doesn’t want to do that around his kid but… it’s hard sometimes. He still misses Cyril, painfully, every day. He hasn’t had an actually relationship since. Anything would feel way to much like cheating. He can only have sex when he’s drunk or high or something so he can forget and remember all at once.
So that’s where he is right now.

SOME BASICS
Name:Oliver William Laurence
Nickname(s): Oli is the genral nickname… his band sometimes calls him ‘Dad’, ususally when they’re mocking him but it’s kind of an affection thing too.
Age: 26
Birthday: Dec. 20th 1981
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Gay… and that gets really funny sometimes because of the fact he has a kid. “Oh did your girlfriend leave you with the child?” “Well yeah… but see… my girlfriend had a penis”. It’s just funny sometimes. He’s not ashamed of the fact he’s gay though.
Band and Position: Drummer for Skeleton Kings
~~ She tied you to a kitchen chair
APPEARANCE
Hair: He’s got dark brown hair that isn’t quite long enough to hang in his eyes but might get there is a short amount of time. When it’s not combed it tends to give him a serve case of behead and sometimes he’ll have berets or mini pigtails in it because his kid is going through a hairdresser phase.
Eyes: Oli has light brown eyes that he’s actually rather proud of and knows are pretty nice.
Height: He’s on the tall-ish side, maybe 6 feet or so. Not freakishly tall but tall enough that he get look down on plenty of people. It makes him smile.
Weight: He’s not thin really, but he’s kind of board shouldered and not really fat. He probably weighs in the neighborhood of 170 or so.
Body: He’s pretty all around average, kind of big but not in a fat sort of way. He’s just tall and large. He’s comfortable with his body though and his partners and friends sometimes tell him he’s like a big teddy bear. He likes that.
Distinguishing Feature: Nothing really.
Style: Oli doesn’t really have a style. He’s very laid back in his dress and favors sweaters over jeans to anything else. T-shirts in the summer or hot months, sneakers. He goes for comfort over style any day of the week and it’s not uncommon for him to laze about in lounge pants for the entire day if there’s nothing to do.
Other: Nothing really. He doesn’t really have any piercings or tattoos or anything else super distinctive.

PERSONALITY
OLI’s likes: dancing in the rain; just being in the rain; just the rain; thunder storms; fireplaces; floating on a lake; seeing people smile; snow storms; snow angles; just snow; chicken noodle soup; cuddling; people who are practical; ‘freaks’; people who are strong; people who understand his predicament; ‘all in good fun’ arguments; holding hands with his friends or someone he likes; word games; board games; card games; fantasy novels; anything written by Neil Gaiman or Stephan King or Terry Pratchet or Kate DiCammilo; crime dramas; movies with sad endings that makes sense; being close to someone; feeling useful; learning things; animals (especially cats and rabbits);being warm and comfortable; children laughing; sleeping wrapped up in his blankets with his kid; hot chocolate; coffee; pop tarts; apple pie; rainbows… real ones; being around a lot of music; his job; people smiling; making people smile; feeling safe; feeling grounded; people who interact with little Tucker like he’s actually a normal person, like being the child of a single gay parent still makes him normal; his kid of course; watching musical performances
OLI’s dislikes: ‘well bred’ kids; people who give him weird looks for being a parent; hypocrisy; hate; his friends being in pain, either physical or emotional; feeling unsafe or pressured; seeing people hurt and suffer; people who are enamored with him just because he’s in a band, without knowing who he is; people who judge him or anyone else, with out knowing what they’re talking about; idiots who don’t know they’re idiots; people who misuse big words because they think they’ll sound smart
OLI’s strengths:
- He’s very good at keeping his cool in most situations that do not involve a threat to those he cares about. He’s just a careful, practical sort of person.
- He tends to be pretty good at bringing light to a situation. Even though he is highly depressive at many times in many ways. But he’s good at bringing light and laughter to other people… like maybe that would fix him.
- He’s got great patience most of the time. It comes with being a father. He’s good at handling multiple things and waiting for things and… well whatever. He deals with a little boy all by himself.
- He’s great at faking happiness. It a crappy talent to have but it’s helpful. it prevents people from worrying about him.
OLI’s weaknesses:
- He’s got a weakness for his kid. He’s do anything for that little boy, anything and everything. He just wants Tucker to be safe and secure and happy.
- He’s got another weakness for the youngest member of the band, IVES, who’s just a kid himself, more so than the rest of them. He has a soft spot for IVES you could say.
- He’s not too good at getting past his dead boyfriend and he still morns and misses him. he still drinks himself into oblivion over the guy.
OLI’s goals:
-It’s a ridiculously childish dream but he kind of wants to find someone else to love again you know… like he doesn’t want to be so broken and alone anymore.
- He wishes for success for the band, mostly for the benefit of everyone else.
- He wants Tucker to get a good start in life and end up somewhere as someone
- He’s not good with self serving goals. In a lot of ways he’s still too depressed.
OLI’s fears:
- leaving Reed with no one… so dieing… but it’s not the death part he’s afraid of
-osing Reed, to the law or to some homophobic bastard like he lost his boyfriend
-getting hurt himself… again mostly just because of what it would do to Reed or to anyone else he attaches himself to.
OLI’s habbits/quirks:
- he loves to ruffle hair, not his own, like his kid’s hair
- he has this habit of being very, very protective to the point where he jumps o conclusions and jumps to defend the people he really loves, like his kid
- when he goes through his depressive fits and misses his boyfriend and get depressed he had this habit of sleeping around, indiscriminately for a week or so.
PERSONALITY:
F A T H E R L Y
A lot of what makes Oli who he is, is the fact that he does have a child. He has a smart little kid named Tucker. Tucker is 6 years old, and the most important person in Oli’s life and a major influence in everything he is and everything he does. He behaves very much like a father and people have told him that before. He watches after those younger then himself and always just looks out for people. He’s not overly and harshly protective, not like a mother (mommies are business, daddies are fun) but he defiantly has that father type vibe to him. Maybe it’s more of a father/older brother hybrid coming out of the fact that he’s so young. He’s also the oldest member of the band, 5 years older than the next oldest member. So it’s not an entirely far fetched idea.
O U T G O I N G && S O C I A L
He’s not a shy person, Oli. He’s grounded and reserved sometimes when he needs to be sure. He’s an adaptable sort of person and he can meld with his surroundings if he needs to. But he likes being social and outgoing and smiling. He likes meeting new people. He especially has an affinity for artists and those sorts of people. It helps that he’s on tour and thus around tons of musicians and photographers and stylists and other sorts of art types. He loves it.
C A R I N G && K I N D
He’s a nice person, Oli and he does do a whole lot of caring. That’s just who he is. He tends to feel with his whole heart. He’s not really very good at half feeling or middle ground. He cares deeply and feels deep hurt when bad things happen to those he cares about. He gives a lot and he expects in return. He doesn’t let people walk all over him in that sense. He’s practical. He gives and expects something back, some affection, some thanks, a hug, a kiss, a smile. He’ll do a lot for a smile, just a smile, from his favorite person. He doesn’t mind giving.
D E D I C A T E D && F O C U S E D
He’s a very dedicated person and he does so much for those he cares about. He does a lot for his kid, for Tucker. He makes sure Tucker gets help with his school work and he makes sure Tucker is doing alright socially, and they go out to the park sometimes when they have an off day on tour (yeah the kid sticks with him)and they all get their fill of social interaction. Before the band and the tour he put a lot into his work, teaching music to kids. He does it, a lot of the time, for his kid, for Tucker, to support them. He can be a very focused person, pouring everything he has into his task, his job, or into a person. When he loves, and he does love, he can and will give that person anything and all of him. He will do anything to make that person happy, change, anything. If he loves and wants that bad, unrequited or not, he stays focused. That’s who he is.
P R A C T I C A L && G R O U N D E D
He’s a smart guy, Oli. He’s smart about reality, a practical kind of, not-learned-in-books kind of intelligence that boarders on cynicism almost. He knows that he’s good but not irreplaceable and if he does fuck up badly with the band, if his music starts going down hill, it’s not completely out of the question for them to kick him out, for the good of the band. He doubts this will happen because he doesn’t plan on letting himself get that far out of control, but still he knows. He knows that there’s an isnae amount of work that would need to go into taking their band to the top but it’s still fun. He knows that Tucker’s likely going to be on the outs all his life. But he intends to make the best out of everything he has.
A R T I S T I C && M U S I C A L
He does photography in addition to music and does it rather well, not brilliantly perhaps but well. Music is really his big thing though and he plays piano and guitar and bass and flute in addition to the drums. He made his living off of teaching these instrument sot kids and that was really how he got into the band, because he had been giving lessons to CROSS for years. Tucker learns drums and guitar and all manner of things from Oli and the band and Tucker’s becoming very musical as well.
C A U T I O U S && B R O K E N
He’s afraid of a few things, Oli. He’s not afraid of dieing… or even of being killed. People have tried to do that to him before. Eventually they’ll succeed and Oli will die and he’ll be pleased. He’s figures at this point, he’s lived quite enough. He’s done enough to make life worth it. He remembers the bad points sometimes, drops Tucker off with the baby sitter (or leaves him on the bus with IVES who’s much to young to drink) and drinks himself into oblivion for a night or so to remember and forget and fuck and everything. He’s broken like that. He’s afraid of getting hurt and destroyed, of leaving people he loves, of leaving Tucker.
L O V E L Y && S W E E T
Ultimately he’s a wonderful guy, a young father, trying to make his own way in this world for himself and for his kid. He wants to make a better life for Tucker then what he had, isn’t that what every parent wants. He’s a nice guy, sweet and artistic and kind. He tries so hard at everything he does, all the time.
